Welcome
The British Columbia Home Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (BC HPEN) Programs provide support to patients in British Columbia and the Yukon who have specialized nutrition requirements due to gastrointestinal tract (“gut”) problems. Our patients are not able to break down and absorb many of the nutrients found in a normal diet. Instead, our patients have to consume total or supplemental nutrition and/or hydration through an alternative delivery system.
The adult component of the Programs is operated out of St. Paul’s Hospital, a large acute care, teaching and research hospital located in downtown Vancouver. St. Paul’s Hospital is part of the umbrella organization, Providence Health Care (PHC).
Funding for the BC HPEN Programs is provided by PHSA, but PHC manages the overall financial administration of both the adult and pediatric components. The Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) Program and the Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) Program share some of the same staff and have the same administrative and medical leadership; however the programs operate with different models of care.
